Nurture Versus
Nature
The Debate
The Nurture versus Nature debate is
one of the oldest debates in the history of psychology. The argument is about whether a person’s development is because
of their DNA or if it is influenced by their life experiences and environment. This
is still a debate today due to unknown factors that have not been proven true
yet.
Nature
Every individual has genetic coding in
every cell that determines our physical traits such as eye color, hair color,
ear size, height and many other traits. Personality, intelligence, sexual
orientation and likes and dislikes are other attributes that we have. It is
unknown whether these are due to genetic coding in our DNA as well. One of the
biggest arguments is whether there is a gene that is a “gay gene” and determines
an individual’s sexual orientation. Another issue in the debate is whether criminal
acts, tendency to divorce or aggressive and physical behavior can be due to the
“behavioral gene”. One reason that the behavioral genes are thought exist is
because when fraternal twins are raised apart, they still have some of the same
behaviors and responses.
Examples of Nature traits
Athletic
Ability
Addictive personality
.
Nurture
There is a nurture
theory that states that our environment and upbringing influence our intellectual
and behavioral traits. Some psychologist such as John Watson believe that children
learn from their environments and can be trained to have certain likes and
dislikes.
My opinion on this argument
is that humans are influenced by both nature and nurture. I believe that life
experiences have a lot to do with our behavior and responses. I also believe that
we have certain genetic codes that give us our personality traits.

Hi, Cindy! The genetic predisposition in people leads to repeat different patterns. When we recognize those are affecting us, we can build something different for our life, but many of those things that have affected will be present at some time and it will like an internal artifact that will burst at some point. The genetic component affects many people who have struggles with additions such as alcohol and drugs. Creating a safe environment helps in a different and healthy way to cope. Being aware of the genetic predisposition will help to establish limits and be more attentive to what happens in my immediate environment that can lead me to repeat those actions. I was struck by the mention in your blog of the psychologist John Watson about children learning from their environments, I agree with that behavior psychology also advocated by B.F. Skinner, where it is based on the idea that behaviors are acquired through conditioning, in this case of the environments that your mention in your blog. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy! I loved how you did it all together in the end and said that you believe that a person is influenced by nature and nurture. I would agree with this statement and I love how you added that in!
